Gettin' down on Friday #5

[via @melissabunning]

So here we are again. Another Friday, another terminal. I've got the non-stop today though, so at least I won't have to chill in Baltimore.

What a busy day. Some lady in a rental Volvo rear-ended me on the drive over to the airport. Of course she's fine, she was in a Volvo. I'm also moving in today, to my new house.

But you don't care about that. I don't frankly care about that. You're here for the music.

Me too.

// caballo & jairo mendez - temperatura (moombah version) [zippyshare]

Despite what the title may suggest, this song is not a moombahton edit. It's actually at 140 bpm, completely in vogue amidst the tropical, global bass takeover. Recommended if you'd like to have fun for approximately three and a half minutes.

// spooky - spartan (d.o.k. remix) [zippyshare]

Remember when dubstep was good/cool/relevant? I found this in a mailing list that I got from Juno, and it's pretty good. Better days, right?

// petsoop - das boot (hide & scream remix) [zippyshare]

It's little more, how do you say, "maximal" than a lot of what I listen to, but this is fun #indaclub.

// rusko - hold on (the mane thing moombahcore edit) [soundcloud]

Oh. Hell. Yeah. This is, as the title suggests, a moombahton rework by my favorites The Mane Thing of the classic Sub Focus remix of "Hold On". Yes. It's just as good as it sounds:

// schlachthofbronx - chambacu (solo remix) [soundcloud]

I love everything about this song. I love Schlachthofbronx's original, and its air horn drop. I love the cumbia song from which the leading hook is derived. And now I love this rework by Solo, which drops to half time, letting the song smolder:

High Powered Boys - Girly

So, you've probably heard of Surkin ("White Night Two", remix of "DVNO"). And you've maybe heard of Bobmo ("My House", "Bring It"). But did you hear that they got together?

It is my pleasure to present to you the High Powered Boys, the face of Surkin's new label, Marble. This music fits right in amongst the output of a growing crowd of forward-thinking French producers (the Club Cheval crew and Brodinski come to mind), and I've really begun to wonder if the term "French house" is about to undergo a massive shift in meaning.

Regardless, here's the new single from the High Powered Boys, "Girly". Au revoir.

Dillon Francis Hard Summer Mix

[via hard presents]

So, it's summer...guess what that means?

For me, at least, it means that - Lakers' disappointing second round exit notwithstanding - I wish I lived in Los Angeles. It's HARDFEST SEASON.

And my favorite 'Murican genre-hopping dream producer has offered us a taste of what's to come for the citizens of downtown L.A. this August. Hmmmm...could be chill.

Dillon Francis - HARD Summer 2011 Mix - hardfest.com by HARD hardfest.com

Oh, and here's the lineup. Whatever that means.

Deadyboy - Here 4 U

Though his output may be sparse, Deadboy still does it best.

A perfect summation of the direction house has taken of late, "Here 4 U" borrows UK funky rhythm, garage percussion, and future bass synth, a composite of all things forward thiking.

The result is beautiful. Cop the rest of the release on boomkat, or a similar online market near you.

Dubstep, dancehall, moombahton - all things new to the average club-goer (at one time or another) but now more or less accepted by dancefloors everywhere...

So when's it gonna be that time for juke and footwork?? It's fun, it's fast, it's HOOD AS FUCK. So wut rong noo?

Blah....juke. Here. I have a headache.

Tomando sol

[via me, barcelona, es, spring '10]

What's there to do in Florida?

Plenty, I suppose. You could go see a Miami Heat basketball game. You could enroll in summer session at UF. You could go take a tour of the state capitol. You could even go to Disney World (I suppose).

Gettin' down on Friday #4

[via my headstash]

Big summer, big tracks.

What else can really be said? It's the season for convertibles, block parties, and beaters. So turn up the bass, take it off, and tune in.

// annger dimas - like this (obeyah edit) [zippyshare]

Straightforward bass grooves, from an artist who, possibly more than anybody, deserves the moombahton treatment. Angger Dimas is all about aggressive dutch horns, huge bass, and ghetto samples. Check, check, and check - it sounds great at 108.

// alvaro & punish - cubata (breakdown remix) [zippyshare]

$o L@tin. So fUnKy. Tan sucia. And then it breaks down...whoa.

// surkin - white knight two (nikko remix) [zippyshare]

I love Nikko. He strikes the perfect balance between ghetto, b-more, and house. Like the best in the game, all he cares about is making people dance - which is why we're all doing this in the first place, right? This has a sick, staccato bassline and keeps Surkin's synth lines. drop 4 a good tyme.

// emmanuelle - l'abandon des bonnes manieres (hat & hoodie remix) [zippyshare]

I had never heard of Hat & Hoodie until a couple weeks ago, when I stumbled across their blog while looking for some tasty bass tunes. Their semi-regular mixtapes, which they inexplicably stopped uploading last October, are some of the best mixes I've ever heard, and full of tunes like this refix of Emmanuelle. Download, enjoi.

// shameboy - vultures (boemklatsch remix) [zippyshare]

Dutch house collective Boemklatsch is sort of hit or miss. A lot of it is cheesy, but work like their "Burning Hot" remix of C-mon & Kypski is epic. This here is uplifting, beautiful, and essential.

SBTRKT ft. Little Dragon & Drake - Wildfire

[via tweeter?]

Aaron Jerome, or better known by his alias, SBTRKT, has taken the EDM scene by storm in only a few short months. With killer remixes of Tinie Tempah's hit, Pass Out, and Modeselektor's Art & Cash, SBTRKT is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

On the original production front, his track Look at Stars has been crushing dance floors all over the world. His most recent effort features the vocal stylings of Little Dragon as well as a quickie verse by none other than famed rapper Drake. This is an instant classic sure to keep the floor moving, and I for one can't wait for the debut album from SBTRKT later this year. Don't forget to catch him this summer at Camp Bisco in Mariaville, NY.

Brenmar - Taking It Down

[via @onlylivinggrlny]

In case you couldn't tell, me and my friends have an almost unhealthy obsession with Brenmar. I've been to a lot of shows, from high profile festival sets to scuzzy garages by the pier to dingy house parties, and nobody shuts down the club like my boy from Chicago.

He just released a new video for his single "Taking It Down", and it epitomizes his sound: sexy, refined, and thoroughly ass-shakeable. Enjoy at yr own risk.

OUTPOST1 w/ DJ MikeQ

[via keepalbanyboring]

Dis one for all mi upstaytas, loyal to tha Albany crew.

aka this Friday at the Fuzebox, there's going to be a party. A pretty sick one. It's gonna feature DJ MikeQ, the poster-child of the (admittedly kinda weird, but perfectly valid) ballroom scene, which you might have read about in XLR8R's lengthy writeup from a month or so back. I think MikeQ might be best known (at least amongst my friends) for his re-fix of Willow Smith's Whip My Hair, which is a ton of fun to drop in tha club.

This is going to be the third installment of the monthly Outpost1 parties (which last month featured Ghosts on Tape), which are curated by Deep Children, hometown heroes of the burgeoning Albany scene. Unfortunately I'm going to be in Florida this Friday, and unable to attend, but it's definitely gonna be worth your time.

WHAT: OUTPOST1 w/ DJ MikeQ
WHERE: Fuzebox, 12 Central Ave, Albany, NY
WHEN: Friday, May 20th @ 10PM
COST: $5

Until then, check out this great mix that Deep Children made for the party below:

The Mountain

[via ??? twitter i think]

Wow. This is just breathtaking. Beautiful music, beautiful scenery. Sorry, you can't drop it in the club. But check it out regardless. Here's the story:

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies...
(Read the rest on Vimeo).

TRC - Oo Aa Ee (Royal T Remix)

Ahh...nothing like some nice instrumental garage to start the week off right...

This dropped today on Butterz records, along with the A-side "Boo You", which features grime MCs P-Money and Blacks....which is pretty cool, if grime's your gig. You can buy the whole release here on iTunes.

I for one prefer this dub cut, which has the perfect groove that's just as potent filling up the club at 10PM as it is at 3:30 trying to empty it out...

Lokiboi - Summer Groove

[via @nastylokiboi on twatter]

Sensual, slow. Sultry. Saucy.

The beginning is creepy, like the soundtrack from Lost. The rest is haunting, familiar but never heard.

Something summer.

Gettin' down on Friday #3

[via me, madrid, es, spring 2010]

So here we are. I'm sitting in the Baltimore terminal for what seems like the hundredth time in the last month. School's over, I'm unemployed. But I still have the music. I can never forget that.

// antony santos - vete (uproot andy remix) [zippyshare]

I love this song, and the way that Uproot Andy fuses house tempo, organic guitar picks, and a cumbia feel for the perfect sunny, southern, summer jam. If you live in the NYC area, be sure to check out his Que Bajo?! parties, they're apparently a riot. I'm looking to do big things with this guy this summer (if I can catch him before he goes back to Colombia...)

// the subs - don't stop (aston shuffle remix) [soundcloud]

This isn't anything fancy, just straightforward, room-filling fun. This is coming out at the end of May, can't wait to download a full version of it:

// doyo - blast (mentalcut moombahton edit) [zippyshare]

I've never heard of Mentalcut before, and his soundcloud seems to be full of mash-ups, but this song is awesome. As much as I love the latin jams, I really like moombahton that takes the urban, bassline direction, and this refix of Doyo doesn't dissapoint.

// ashanti - fancy (brenmar remix) [zippyshare]

This is a rework by Brenmar of an Ashanti track based around her part in Drake's summer hit "Fancy". He featured it in last week's mix for Fader and decided to give it away for free the other day. It's nothing too crazy, but definitely worth having in yr sets.

Chau!

I wish they told me things. I wish we believed girls when they tell us they're crazy. I wish I believed it when they told me that time flies. I wish I had faith. I wish I was at the club - nothing matters in the club. I wish I could live in the club. I wish they told you how to act in the club.

Redlight - Source 16

So I don't know what the hype was like for this in the UK - I can only imagine! But I've been waiting for this track to drop for QUITE awhile, and here it is, in all its glory. Now you don't have to be named Roska to get a VIP of the track, and now can spin it for your very self!

Redlight, who is the "dubstep" alter-ego of drum and bass legend Clipz, has created a bit of a bastard child with "Source 16", in that it has that funky rhythm, house bpm, and Jack Beats / LFO wobble (that's subtle and fun!) If you haven't heard it yet, then DO!

Gettin' down on Friday #2

[via me, cascais, portugal 2010]

Wow. Isn't this crazy? I've been back on the internet for a whole week or so now, and I haven't lost interest. Weird, I know. I can't believe that summer's basically here and that I'm living in Albany full-time. Buh bye sunshine and beaches....on the plus side, there's still plenty of awesome music coming out, and thanks to the magic of the internet, I can still get at it no matter WHERE I am!

This week we've got some juke, we've got some house, we've got some step, and we've even got some - SHOCK - moombahton, but it's all bass-centric and that's all that matters. As Mr. Worldwide himself would say, Dale, disfruta.

***

// jwls x billy the gent - chick like this [zippyshare]

This is some supergroup shit, and also some of the most club-ready moombahton, that combines all of the genre's best aspects. It's a fusion of hip-hop, latin, dutch, and - best of all - truly monumental bass. Drop this, watch the club shake.

// dj drmr - legal swings [zippyshare]

I already blogged about a DrMr track earlier this week, but this one is hot off the presses, and it's quite the journey. I don't quite know how to pin it down genre-wise, but I give it my full backing. Which I'm sure means a lot to you since I've been regularly updating this website for all of about 9 days now....just trust me on this one.

// jody breeze - the way i move [zippyshare]

JUKE, JUKE, JUKE. BASS, BASS, BASS. This was in the new Canblaster mix and it's got me hooked.

// the mane thing - listen [zippyshare]

I am in love with The Mane Thing, ever since I heard their track "Get Paid" on a world club compilation earlier this year (look it up). Their style is so cool, going from kinda filter, disco sounding party house bridges and builds into stark, futuristic drops that combine to form some of the best club music around. "Listen", which just dropped this year, is by no means an exception to this trend.

// clash the disko kids - transient (shameboy remix) [zippyshare]

It's a transitive nightfall of electro house, and this second drop screams summer festival. Goodbye and good luck.

Afrojack & R3hab - Aces High (Prutataa)

Wow what a week for Afrojack. Earlier this week, he and Quintino dropped "Selecta", but frankly, this song blows it OUT OF THE FUCKING WATER.

People have been waiting on this R3hab collaboration to drop for awhile, and it's certainly been worth the wait. The drop pays off in a huge way, and it's just in time for the summer festival season. Just when I thought the man was played out, he floors me again.

Johnny Love - The Switch

So you ever heard of Deathface? Yeah, ew.

Well he's changed names, changed styles, and is now pretty fucking sick. I'd like to introduce Johnny Love:

"Anyone who recently discovered me might be confused by the completely different tracks from Deathface that these are, but, I’m a DJ first and foremost (well, maybe a degenerate first and foremost, but thats neither here nor there) and if you only listen to one style of music you’re cheating yourself. Its like kids that say “i listen to everything but country” when country (pre nashville glam bs) is actually completely fucking awesome." - Johnny Love

So check out his track "The Switch" below, and lemme know whatchu think.

Brenmar - Gold Bricks Mix

[via fader]

SO I know I literally just put up a compilation of chill mixes and whatnot, but this deserves a post of its own.

Ever since seeing him play in New Paltz, I've been OBSESSED with Brenmar. I saw him tweet this weekend that he had made a mix for the Fader and it would be dropping this week, so I've been literally been refreshing on repeat until I saw it go live.
